The Maharaja is an incredibly stunning boutique restaurant inspired by the regal beauty of India’s diverse landscape of architecture and flavours. The concept offers a visual and culinary journey through three magnificent palaces of India and a menu featuring cuisine from four different regions in India.
Located in a heritage building over a century old and formerly The Mad Hatter along Eglinton Ave. and Heritage Hills Blvd., the restaurant was completely gutted and the transformation breathtaking.
The attention to fine details such as coat check service, a description and tour of the restaurant by the host, the tray of mild refreshments after the meal, heated plate for dining, a bowl of warm lemon water to cleanse your hands all enhance the fine dining experience.
The intimate and ornately designed restaurant takes you through a journey of three of India’s palaces starting with Hawa Mahal (Palace of Wind) located Jaipur, is an elevated room to the right of the restaurant which is bright and airy. The Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) located in Pakistan is the largest of the three rooms located in back of the restaurant and decorated with intricate lattice mirror walls and chandelier. Lastly, Rang Mahal (Palace of Colour) located in Dehli, is a room to the left of the restaurant represents the diversity of colours and cultures in India. The beautifully lit bar located in the centre of the restaurant is made of a single piece of hand-crafted luminescent honeycomb onyx from Pakistan.
The walls are adorned with recreated original Indian art by a local Mississauga artist. Each section of the restaurant features numerous wall art including one embellished with gold leaf.
The unique resto concept was created by a family with experience in consulting and managing hotels and restaurants in India and in the Middle East. Jehangir Khan and his wife Sheryl Serrao along with his father Kekky Khan created the restaurant to fill a void in Mississauga.
“As a family, we love eating out. We are foodies and felt that Mississauga was missing this kind of [dining] experience…it’s a project of love”, says Jehangir.
The Windows of Reflections is located in the front of the restaurant and features Jehangir and Sheryl’s personal collection of artifacts from travels across India. Ambient music heard throughout the restaurant, beautiful chandeliers, intricate patterns, royal colours, tufted and plush seating create an elegant dining experience.
Food Menu: The storybook menu is divided into four regional cuisines found in India which have been influenced by various ingredients and flavours of a variety of countries including Greece, West and Central Asia and Persia. There are a number of shareable dishes and entrees highlighting the unique flavours of each region through Awadhi cuisine, classic Hyderabadi cuisine, Punjabi cuisine and Rajputana cuisine. The extensive menu caters to all palates and features distinct regional dishes presented on fine dishes such as copper bowls, slate boards, and copper table top grill.
Chef: Executive chef Praveen Chilkuri has over 22 years of international experience. He trained under award winning chefs at the ITC Sheraton New Delhi and has worked as an executive chef for numerous hotels in Toronto. Chef Chilkuri is also a Humber College culinary instructor.
Drink Menu: The drink menu includes over 220 selections ranging from wine to single malt scotch and ultra premium vodka.
What’s Up and Coming? Behind some of the large framed wall art you’ll find throughout the restaurant are 60″ big screen T.V.’s which were added if there is a demand to show popular games (i.e. cricket) for ardent sports fans (after dinner service of course).
